When do the meals usually arrive?
Your meal will normally be delivered between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Meals are prepared fresh daily in our central kitchen in McKinney. Preparation begins at 5:00 a.m.. Food is packaged and ready for shipment to various drop points by 9:30. Volunteers pick up food for their designated routes by 11:00 and begin delivery. Exactly when you will receive your meal can vary depending on the number of people on the route and whether other clients need special attention. Volunteers do their very best to get your meal to you in a timely fashion.
Can the volunteer leave my meal if I am not home one day?
Sorry. Volunteers are instructed never to leave a meal without seeing the client. We want to be sure that you are okay. In fact, volunteers are told to call our office if they don’t get an answer at your door. If you know you are not going to be home, please call our office at 972-562-6996 ext. 113 the day before so that we won’t prepare a meal for you. Curtailing waste saves money and helps us serve more people.
What if I have an emergency and can’t call till that morning?
We know emergencies do happen. We still would like you to call us so we can save the volunteer from making an unnecessary trip to your house and we will know that you are okay.
Our office has an answering machine 24 hours a day. Messages may be left at any time. (972) 562-6996 ext.113
How much does this cost?
Our program is on a donation basis. We will send you a letter at the end of every month indicating the number of meals you received. While we suggest a donation of $3 per meal, no one is ever denied a meal. Some clients prefer to have their family members receive this letter and take care of their donation.
How can I or someone I know sign up for Meals on Wheels?
Anyone can make a referral by calling our office at (972) 562-6996 ext 123 or E-mail AdamsM (at) mowcc.com An in-home assessment will be scheduled to determine eligibility. This assessment which takes about 1 hour is normally done within 3-5 days of receiving the phone request. We normally start new meals every Monday, but in emergency situations can begin sooner.
